Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Day--what a wonderful idea for spreading the Christmas spirit around with a most unexpected interfaith initiative. Here's the link:

Warning: Avatar may be tainted

A great loss is about to occur--Peter Steinfels' biweekly column, "Beliefs," is about to disappear from The New York Times.

However, perhaps this vacuum will be partially filled by their new op-ed columnist Ross Douthat (see earlier blog entry about Karen Armstrong). His column today, about Avatar, is a brilliant short piece about the pantheistic non-theology espoused in that movie. He correctly cites Dancing With Wolves, Star Wars, The Lion King, and even Pocahontas as examples of the genre.

I doubt if I'd agree with Mr. Douthat about political issues, but the man knows a thing or two about Christian doctrine. Here's the link:

A story for Christmas

Nicholas Kristof continues to be one of the most sensitive journalists working today. His latest column tells a breathtaking story. If you read Dave Eggers' widely praised book What Is the What, about one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, you will be especially interested, but anyone will be gripped by this extraordinary sequel, whether they have read the book or not. Here is the link to Kristof's latest column:

A biblical story for Advent

Here is one of the most impressive stories about what a church can do that I've seen in a while. If you read it carefully, you'll find a superb illlustration for a sermon on the fourth Sunday in Advent. Nina Bernstein writes regularly about immigration and performs a great service by making us see people who are otherwise invisible.
